With Thanksgiving in the rear view, towns all over the Cape are gearing up for a month’s worth of festive events and activities—and there is no shortage of holiday spirit in Mashpee this year.

The Cape Cod Christmas Market, now in its third year, brings residents a chance to shop local and bask in the holiday cheer right here in Mashpee. Located at the Naukabout Beer Garden at the Mashpee Commons Village Green across from the Mashpee Public Library, the open-air shopping experience is akin to Boston’s Snowport—which is exactly the vision that Mashpee Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Stephanie Viva was hoping to bring to town. With more than 80 local vendors, crafters and creators, shoppers at the market are in for a festive treat, complete with food trucks, a filling station, live entertainment, craft brews and free kids’ activities and a show.

The Christmas Market is open on Sunday, December 7, and 14 from 10 AM to 2 PM. Admission is free. Special features on December 7 include live music from Matt Levesque and appearances from Buddy the Elf and Elf on the Shelf. December 14 will bring “the return of The Goatcracker”—”Tchaikovsky as you’ve never seen before,” featuring the goats from Mindful Goat Yoga of Cape Cod. And yes, they are dancing in tutus, Viva said.

Turnout at the Market has been great so far, Viva said.

“We’ve had more than 600 people a day come and support our micro-businesses and entrepreneurs,” she told the Enterprise this week.

Maika Niu, outfielder for the Falmouth Commodores, has been named the recipient of the prestigious Pat Sorenti Most Valuable Player Award for the 2025 Cape Cod Baseball League season. His outstanding performance at the plate earned him the league’s top individual honor.

Niu finished second in the league with 23 RBIs and 28 runs scored. He also demonstrated his power, leading the Cape League with eight home runs. Niu was a constant threat on the bases, successfully stealing 15 during 35 games played this season. He was a true offensive threat for the Commodores.

Earlier this season, Niu was one of nine Falmouth Commodores, the most in the league, chosen to play in the Cape League All-Star Game, earning a starting spot in center field. He also competed in the 2025 Cape Cod Baseball League Home Run Derby Contest.

According to Niu, he elevated his game this summer by not doing too much.

"Just sticking with it and staying simple. I found that if I just tried to do that, good things happened," Niu said.

When asked about his success, Niu replied, “It’s a kids’ game, but you’ve got to lock in and execute when you have to.”

Niu is the second Falmouth Commodores player to win the MVP award in three years. In 2023, it was presented to Travis Bazzana, the first overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft. He joins a group of talented former Commodores who have earned this recognition, including Darin Erstad, Daniel Carte, Conor Gillaspie and A.J. Pollock.

The Falmouth Commodores congratulate Niu on his well-deserved recognition.

The Falmouth Commodores Field Manager Jarrod Saltalamacchia (“Salty”) has accepted the Director of Program Development position at the University of Miami. Coach Saltalamacchia’s last day with the Commodores was on August 3.

Saltalamacchia’s coaching experience in Florida and with the Cape Cod Baseball League helped the Commodores through a transitional season. He brought in a new coaching staff, including Assistant Head Coach Beau McMillan, top-level collegiate players who benefited from his experience in the MLB, and new coaching technology. McMillan played in the MiLB and has several years of success coaching at the college level.

Coach Saltalamacchia indicated that, “I had a great season with the Commodores. While the win-loss record was not great, we sent the most players (8) to the Cape League All-Star Team, had 21 players drafted by the MLB, including 3 first-round picks, and Commodores’ player Maika Niu was honored as MVP of the entire Cape Cod Baseball League.” Coach Saltalamacchia continued, “I would like to have stayed with the team, but I was offered a major position with the University of Miami baseball coaching staff as Director of Program Development.”

Bob Curtis, President of the Commodores, stated that “Salty brought a high energy and dynamic atmosphere to Guv Fuller Field. The team had a record in sponsorship donations, record sales in merchandise, and a record number of full-week kids in the youth baseball clinic program.” Additionally, Bob said, “We are extremely grateful for the contributions that Coach Saltalamacchia brought to the Commodores this season. We wish him continued success at the University of Miami.”

Saltalamacchia’s post-MLB career objective has been to coach at the Division 1 collegiate level. He will be replacing Rob Cooper, who spent 10 years as head baseball coach at Penn State prior to joining the University of Miami. The position at the University of Miami will also allow Saltalamacchia to work closer to his home in Palm Beach, FL, where he lives with his wife and four daughters.

A new head coach for the Falmouth Commodores will be named in the coming weeks.
